VIÑAS VIVAS Operational Group: Foliar fertilization and the circular economy to regenerate the health, functioning, and sustainability of Andalusian vineyards

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2024 -2025
  • Assigned Budget 262.608,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Andalucía
  • Project website GO VIÑAS VIVAS
Description of activities
  • Development of agronomic indicators based on the content of essential macro and micronutrients, measured in soil and leaves, and using artificial intelligence to optimize their use.
  • Development of foliar fertilizers based on the circular economy, natural resources, and vermiculture, with complementary nutritional, pesticide, insecticidal, and biostimulant effects.
  • Evaluation of foliar fertilizers developed in combination with nature-based sustainable management strategies: microbial inoculants, mulch, and sheep. Transfer of this innovation to winegrowers and wineries through events and the development of open-access documents.
Contextual description

Adapting agricultural systems to the new guidelines of the Common Agricultural Policy entails implementing actions that allow for input reduction, the implementation of the circular economy, and soil conservation. The use of techniques such as foliar fertilizer application allows for the use of these products at lower doses than those required when applied to the soil, as the nutrients are absorbed directly by the leaves.

This project will promote the recovery of various types of organic waste from agriculture, including by-products from viticulture (pruning and winemaking waste) and livestock (low-quality sheep wool), through the development of foliar fertilizers with beneficial effects on vineyards, continuing the experience accumulated by the "Living Soils" operational group for the regeneration and sustainable management of vineyard soils.

Objectives

Based on the progress made by the “Living Soils” operational group for the regeneration and sustainable management of soil in vineyards, the project will develop foliar fertilizers from the valorization of different organic waste from agriculture, including by-products from viticulture (pruning and winemaking waste) and livestock (low-quality sheep wool), which respond to the specific needs of the vineyard, to support innovative strategies for the sustainable management of Andalusian vineyards and accelerate the transition from intensive conventional vineyards to high-performance sustainable vineyards that provide a wide variety of ecosystem services.
