Abstract

The use of biogas allows the project to align itself with one of the key needs: the use of renewable energy and the utilization of natural resources, which are becoming increasingly scarce. As part of reducing both the input of virgin materials and the production of waste, closing the economic and ecological "loops" or flows of resources, this project treats waste streams to valorize waste.

The project unites two fundamental sectors: agriculture and industry. In this production model, industry works alongside agriculture to generate a new product from waste. In this way, technological uptake will occur not only within the food chain but beyond. Producing a new agricultural input from waste will lower the cost of raw materials. This will have a direct impact on the price of the final product.

Reusing materials could lead to a reduction in raw material purchasing costs, as these elements would no longer be purchased from suppliers and instead be purchased as processed waste, with the resulting cost savings due to the price difference between one element and another. In conclusion, the use of waste will lead to lower prices at all stages of the production chain: fertilizer formulator, farmer, and end consumer.

An end user who includes equipment like the one developed in the project in their facilities could take advantage of the technology and knowledge generated to reduce their biogas treatment costs, converting the generated waste into a byproduct that can be reused as agricultural fertilizer.

Description of activities
  • Design of H2S adsorption systems with iron-based adsorbent.
  • Design of use of by-products (adsorbent) as fertilizer material.
  • Manufacturing of capture prototype and field testing.
  • Design of formulations based on the waste under study
  • Validation of the adsorption system for polluting gases and the fertilizer byproduct created from gas capture waste.
Objectives
  • Investigate the main sustainable desulfurization technologies that allow the comprehensive use of byproducts generated in agriculture (and other possible sectors).
  • Develop and validate recyclable contaminant adsorption fillers.
  • Develop and validate technically and economically viable gas treatment facilities.
  • Validation of the desulfurization/deodorization process using field data and statistical analysis.
  • Dissemination of sustainable gas decontamination technologies.
