DIAGNOSCORD Operational Group: Unified sheep tracking and observation system: active surveillance and continuous health monitoring on farms in Aragon
- Type Operational group
- Status In progress
- Execution 2023 -2037
- Assigned Budget 59.106,00 €
- Scope Autonómico
- Autonomous community Aragón
- Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
Achieving the project's objectives will provide a tool to improve disease diagnosis during lamb fattening. This will lead to improved animal welfare by improving animal health while also improving farm productivity.
A prototype will be available that will capture conventional and thermal images of the animals, helping to establish the behavioral patterns of both healthy and sick lambs. These patterns will be the mechanism through which a diagnosis will be issued for the lambs so that caregivers can assess their health status.
The project is structured into main activities and complementary activities that are necessary to carry out the main activities. The activities follow an established order that will lead to the achievement of the objectives in the final stage of the project.
- Creation of a prototype for data capture (set of RGB and thermal cameras, processors and communicators).
- Analysis of the data acquired through the application of different tracking algorithms.
- Daily assessment of the health status of animals by specialized personnel (veterinarian).
- Selection of the algorithm with the highest accuracy in associating image data with the collected health data.
- Creation of an algorithm that allows for the health assessment of lambs.
- Validation of the results provided by the algorithm through clinical examination of the lambs by a veterinarian.
- Establishment of concordance values between the results obtained through the use of the algorithm and the clinical examination of the lambs.
Diagnosing diseases in fattening lambs is not straightforward, as demonstrated by the fact that a high percentage of lambs present lung lesions when they arrive at the slaughterhouse without having been diagnosed during the fattening period. To improve this diagnosis, imaging techniques based on continuous video capture and the development of an algorithm capable of detecting behavioral patterns in sick animals will be used.
