Operational Group: Epidemiological digitalization system for PRRS disease to improve its control and implementation of biosecurity measures on livestock farms

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2026
  • Assigned Budget 150.000,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Aragón
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
Abstract

The main objective of the project is to research and implement new control and biosecurity measures for pig farms against the PRRS virus. This improvement in animal health will be achieved by reducing contamination and spread of PRRS disease within the farm, as well as its spread between farms in the area or those involved in the production cycle or transportation tasks. Reducing the presence or spread of the disease will improve farm competitiveness and profitability, along with greater sustainability for the production system.

Furthermore, this monitoring will be carried out through an epidemiological study using a real-time data collection and digitization system using a novel application specifically designed for PRRS. This system and associated strategy represent a completely innovative process not only for disease control but also as a strategic measure for disease control in pig farms.

Description

The project is still in its second year, and the schedule is on track. We must continue with subsequent years of the project to apply all the knowledge acquired about PRRS disease. The objectives have been met, with the study of PRRS outbreaks associated with the ADS Tauste, ADS Ejea, and Puy Ovil farms. We have been able to design a versatile tool that seeks to improve access and analysis of key data in real time.

The use of already integrated sequence comparison technologies, along with the future addition of tools for trend analysis, risk factors, and risk maps, add significant value to the application, offering a technical approach that will allow users to make decisions based on the collected data. Throughout development, a balance has been maintained between technical functionality and ease of use, with the goal of offering a practical and adaptable tool.

Description of activities
  • Design of data collection and monitoring protocols.
  • Application validation and epidemiological data collection
  • Study of disease flows and establish their correlation with biosecurity measures
Objectives

The project seeks to implement new control and biosecurity measures for pig farms against the PRRS virus, and is therefore closely linked to the quest to improve the health of the farm, and of the animals in particular.

This improvement in animal health will be achieved by reducing contamination and the spread of PRRS disease within the farm, but also by reducing its spread between farms in the area or those involved in the production cycle or transportation tasks.
