CONCOFOR Operational Group: Monitoring the welfare of fattening lambs to reduce the incidence of their main pathologies

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2024 -2027
  • Assigned Budget 44.191,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Aragón
Description

The project aims to establish recommendations tailored to fattening lambs with a focus on precision livestock farming.

Description of activities

The project focuses on the collection and analysis of animal activity data, and several activities will be carried out to achieve this. The lambs' activity and circadian rhythms will be assessed during the fattening period. This will be measured at several different stocking densities to establish a relationship between the number of lambs per square meter and changes in activity and circadian rhythms. It is very important that this be done simultaneously on three different farms to ensure the robustness of the results obtained.

In addition, all data related to diseases that may affect the animals will be taken into account during the study. Furthermore, an analysis will be conducted of the time the lambs spend near feeders and waterers, thereby providing insight into the lambs' feeding and drinking patterns during the fattening period.

All of this data, along with disease data, will provide a comprehensive view of lamb behavior during the finishing phase and its relationship to disease. Since this data can be affected by environmental conditions, data collection must be conducted several times throughout the year to accurately reflect any variations that may occur. All of these activities will ultimately allow us to develop scientifically based recommendations on stocking density and the availability of feeders and waterers to achieve the highest welfare standards and reduce the presence of disease in our feedlots.

Objectives

Various factors influence the well-being of fattening lambs, with physical comfort being one of the most important. This is known as stocking density, and recommendations vary widely, ranging from 0.3 m2/lamb to 1.2 m2/lamb.

However, these recommendations are not supported by scientific studies conducted under commercial conditions. For this reason, the project aims to establish recommendations tailored to fattening lambs with a focus on precision livestock farming.

Results

The expected results cover three key aspects of achieving adequate lamb welfare during the fattening period. Specifically, the project will establish three issues for which recommendations exist, but no scientific studies are available to support them.

Specifically, data on stocking density (square meters per lamb), feeding space, and watering space will be available to ensure the well-being of fattening lambs. These three aspects will have a clear effect on improving the condition of the lambs by improving their immune status, which will significantly reduce diseases during this period. In this way, animal welfare will, on the one hand, improve farm efficiency by reducing the severity of diseases and, at the same time, reduce the need for antibiotics to treat them.
