SENSA Operational Group: Simplified implementation of sensor technology in extensive crop management

  • Type Operational group
  • Status In progress
  • Execution 2023 -2026
  • Assigned Budget 150.000,00 €
  • Scope Autonómico
  • Autonomous community Aragón
  • Main source of financing PEPAC 2023-2027
Abstract

The objectives of this project are:

  1. To evaluate the effect of variable doses in the application of nitrogen fertilizers in top dressing.
  2. Develop and evaluate a protocol for the real-time application of topdressing nitrogen fertilizer.
  3. Evaluate the effect of planting conditions on the yield of different crops.
  4. To evaluate the effect of reducing sowing rates on the appearance of weed flora and diseases.
  5. Select and evaluate different commercial platform alternatives for crop monitoring.
Description

This project, through the simplified implementation of sensors and technology related to precision agriculture, will optimize the efficiency of input application on selected plots. This efficiency will be associated with cost reduction and environmental and sustainability benefits. At the social level, by promoting the development of farmers and advisors in these techniques, it will contribute to the improvement of the agri-food chain, fostering knowledge exchange among all the links involved.

Description of activities

Study of different commercial platforms for crop monitoring. During 2024, part of the information generated in field trials was managed with different tools, and it was considered that the most comprehensive for crop monitoring and generating prescription maps is Sativum, a tool created by the ItaCyL of Castilla y León.

Currently, work is being done with ItaCyL to generate a comprehensive monitoring project for the experimental plots in this project, in order to analyze the time-series data through its platform and make comparisons. Experimental design and monitoring of trials in agricultural plots: In the municipality of Valsalada (Huesca), an experimental design with variable seed and fertilizer doses was established in the plots selected for the trials. In the municipality of Tardienta (Huesca), an experimental design with variable seed dosage was established. During 2024, the technology for variable application in real time using on-board sensors was developed. Specifically, the Polytechnic School acquired a pair of Topcon CropSpec proximity sensors and installed them on the tractor of a member of the Virgen de la Corona Cooperative.

Objectives

Develop and evaluate a protocol for the real-time application of topdressing nitrogen fertilizer, assess the effect of planting conditions on crop yield, and select and evaluate different commercial platform alternatives for crop monitoring.
