Description

The current agricultural model shows signs of decline due to the deterioration of key ecological processes, such as pollination. The main drivers of change linked to its decline are land-use changes (e.g., crop simplification), intensive agricultural practices related to the use of plant protection products, invasive alien species, pathogens, and climate change. Different agricultural strategies and practices need to be validated to mitigate this trend and create symbiotic relationships between agroecological agriculture and beekeeping.

Description of activities
  • Preliminary analysis of the current and expected situation in relation to the presence of wild pollinators and beekeeping activity.
  • Carrying out a set of complementary botanical, climatic, etc. studies.
  • Contact with agroecological producers who will participate in the study.
  • Design of practices for mutually beneficial agronomic development between agriculture and beekeeping, with the proposal, selection, and validation of indicators in different scenarios and considering the potential effects of climate change.
  • Communication and dissemination actions.
Objectives

Development and validation of an agronomic design that combines beekeeping and agriculture in the Community of Madrid and fosters synergies between the two, defining best practices for pollinator protection and quantifying agronomic, environmental, and socioeconomic outcomes in different scenarios and taking into account the influence of climate change. This approach combines the presence of beekeepers familiar with their requirements and potential with agroecological producers interested in improving production characteristics.

Results

The practical results of this proposal can be structured into three large groups:

  • The results of experimentation in agro-beekeeping, specifically in the selection, validation, measurement, and data analysis of indicators. This result will be made available to industry professionals, who will be able to understand the status of their farms and become familiar with data collection.
  • Byproducts of agro-beekeeping management: information on a range of beneficial practices that have environmental and productive impacts. Connecting with other professionals with similar interests, creating a network, understanding their willingness to adapt practices, and secondly, assessing whether they require incentives for their implementation.
  • Those derived from the proper dissemination of collaborative action: Being in contact with other professionals with the same interests, generating a network.
