Abstract

The BIANEXIA project will develop a comprehensive platform with artificial intelligence and IoT technology to improve the competitiveness of extensive livestock farming and hunting farms. This platform will allow real-time monitoring of animal welfare, optimising productive and health management through early alerts based on the detection of anomalies. A decision-making support tool will also be developed that, by combining images and IoT data, will improve profitability, reducing losses and increasing reproductive indicators.

Description

The BIANEXIA project will develop a comprehensive platform with artificial intelligence and IoT technology to improve the competitiveness of extensive livestock farming and game farms. This platform will allow real-time monitoring of animal welfare, optimising productive and health management through early alerts based on the detection of anomalies. A decision-making support tool will also be developed that, by combining images and IoT data, will improve profitability, reducing losses and increasing reproductive indicators. The information obtained will allow consumers to access reliable information on production conditions, adding value to the agri-food chain and promoting more informed and ethical purchasing decisions. The protocols for monitoring animal welfare and the accreditation system will ensure high standards of health, behaviour and comfort in extensive livestock farming and wildlife. Pilot tests in real environments will demonstrate the effectiveness of the solutions, guaranteeing their practical applicability.

Description of activities

The BIANEXIA project integrates AI and IoT technologies to revolutionize livestock and game management, providing real-time monitoring and data analysis to improve animal welfare, increase productivity and ensure regulatory compliance.

  • Monitoring and evaluation : BIANEXIA will implement a framework to evaluate the impact of the project on animal welfare, productivity and sustainability, including:
    • Real-time data collection: Using IoT devices and AI algorithms to collect continuous data on animal health, behavior, and environmental conditions.
    • Performance Metrics: Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure improvements in livestock health, reproductive success rates, and overall farm productivity.
    • Regulatory compliance: ensuring that practices align with national and regional legislation on animal welfare and environmental sustainability.
  • Pilot programs : The project will carry out pilot programs in several regions to:
    • Validate the technology: Demonstrate AI and IoT solutions in real-world environments.
    • Collect user feedback: Collect feedback to improve usability and effectiveness.
    • Measuring impact: Evaluating benefits such as reduced animal mortality rates, increased productivity and improved welfare standards.
  • Stakeholder Engagement : BIANEXIA involves key stakeholders including:
    • Farmers and game managers: providing training and support for the adoption of new technologies.
    • Regulatory bodies: collaborating to ensure compliance and alignment with agricultural policies.
    • Consumers: Improving transparency by providing reliable data on production practices, building trust and supporting informed purchasing decisions.
  • Long-term sustainability : The project promotes sustainable agricultural practices by:
    • Resource optimization: using data analytics to optimize feed, water use and other resources.
    • Economic viability: improving profitability through improved management practices, reducing losses and increasing efficiency.
    • Knowledge sharing: disseminating best practices to encourage widespread adoption of innovative technologies.
Contextual description

The BIANEXIA project was initiated in response to several key drivers in legislation, market demands and technological advances. The growing global emphasis on sustainable agriculture and animal welfare has led to stricter regulations and higher standards for livestock management. Legislation such as the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) calls for improvements in animal health, environmental sustainability and the economic viability of farming practices. Market forces also play an important role, with consumers increasingly demanding transparency and higher standards in the production of animal products. There is a growing preference for ethically sourced, environmentally friendly and high-quality products, requiring farmers to adopt more advanced and sustainable practices.

Technological advances in AI and IoT provide new opportunities to meet these demands. These technologies enable real-time monitoring, data-driven decision making, and automation, which are crucial to improving efficiency, productivity, and regulatory compliance. The ability to collect and analyze large amounts of data from multiple sensors enables more accurate and proactive management of livestock health and well-being.

In addition, economic pressures on extensive livestock farming and hunting estates require innovative solutions to remain competitive. Traditional methods are often labour-intensive and less efficient, making it difficult to meet modern standards and consumer expectations.

The BIANEXIA project aims to address these challenges by developing an integrated platform that leverages AI and IoT technologies. This platform will help farmers monitor and manage livestock more effectively, ensure compliance with regulatory standards, improve animal welfare and provide consumers with reliable information on production practices. In doing so, BIANEXIA seeks to contribute to the modernisation and sustainability of the agricultural sector, ensuring that it can meet the changing demands of legislation and the market.
