Description

Overabundance: Innovation in biosecurity and wild boar control to prevent African swine fever

Objectives

The overall objective is to transfer innovative tools to prepare and train the Spanish swine and hunting sectors to combat ASF.
The specific objectives are:
- Contribute to an effective management strategy for wild boar populations in Spain.
- Prepare the pig farming sector to reduce the risk associated with wild boar.
- Improve the ability to share data and knowledge among sectors involved in preparing for the ASF response.

Results

Characterization of wild boar population dynamics in Spain as a basis for regionalizing its overabundance, implementation of a sustainable population monitoring system, development of a decalogue with the main action measures to ensure sustainable control of wild boar populations, and evaluation of the sustainability of several of these measures in the field.
Analysis of the spatial behavior of wild boar in intensive pig farms and assessment of the risk associated with the use of livestock resources. Improving biosecurity against wild boar in pig farms through the development and application of a standardized protocol for implementing a farm-specific biosecurity plan.
Delivery of training workshops, online courses, and dissemination of results through the creation of articles, development of protocols, and their dissemination on social media, the website, press releases, and audiovisual media.
