Description
QUERCUS SELECCIÓN promotes the selection of cork oaks that have survived drought outbreaks and are good cork producers, cloning them by somatic embryogenesis and, after testing their resistance to Phytophthora cinnamomi, propagating them on a commercial scale to establish them in affected plots in Cádiz, Extremadura and Madrid.
Objectives
- Study of drought-affected areas in Extremadura and Cádiz and selection of more tolerant trees in the best cork-producing areas.
- Cloning of the cork oaks selected for the capture of genetic material through somatic embryogenesis and its conservation in clonal banks.
- Transfer of techniques and materials for commercial development by producing nurseries.
- Dissemination of the technique and project results to the sector.
- Establishment of plots with the obtained varieties.
Results
- Obtaining an updated GIS database of drought hotspots and selected trees in Cádiz and Extremadura.
- Obtaining 40 specimens of each selected variety, establishing an early resistance detection system, and establishing clonal banks in Madrid, Extremadura, and Cádiz for the selected varieties for their conservation.
- Transfer of 100 embryos per variety to the producing nursery for development on a commercial scale.
- Dissemination sessions on the project's objectives and results in Mérida and Cádiz.
- Establishment of plantations with material obtained from plots in La Almoraima and by owners selected by ASAJA.
