Description

Reduction in the use of antibiotics on pig farms and companies through the development of a digital platform for comparing consumption between farms based on health risks and biosecurity.

Objectives
  • Identification and characterization of risk factors for antibiotic consumption in Spanish white-coated pig farms.
  • Development of a platform for capturing and comparing information on health risks and antibiotic consumption between farms and companies in the pig sector.
  • Raising awareness and training producers, veterinarians and visitors on the risks associated with the consumption of antibiotics on pig farms, on the use of the app and the website and on the operation of the platform, promoting its use to reduce the use of antibiotics.
Results
  • Description of the critical points of the management and biosecurity systems of pig farms, the pathologies detected and the alternatives to the use of antibiotics used on farms as tools to accelerate the reduction of antibiotic consumption on pig farms.
  • Implementation of the platform as a tool to support decision-making at farm, company, sector and administration levels, generating information on individual antibiotic consumption and the comparative evolution of this consumption with that of other similar farms.
  • Preparation of a guide for the responsible use of antibiotics in the pig sector, leaflets, posters, informative videos, presentations at events, courses for veterinarians in collaboration with the General Council of Veterinary Colleges of Spain, self-managed course to train any professional in the sector and launch of the Pran Interporc award to recognize pig farms with the lowest level of antibiotic consumption within the framework of the program
