Description
Reducing the use of antibiotics on pig farms and companies through the development of a digital platform for comparing consumption among farms based on health and biosecurity risks.
Objectives
- Identification and characterization of risk factors for antibiotic use in Spanish white-coated pig farms
- Development of a platform for capturing and comparing information on health risks and antibiotic consumption among farms and companies in the swine sector
- Raising awareness and training producers, veterinarians and visitors on the risks associated with antibiotic use on pig farms, the use of the app and website, and the operation of the platform, promoting its use to reduce antibiotic use.
Results
- Description of the critical points of management and biosecurity systems in pig farms, the pathologies detected, and the alternatives to antibiotic use used on farms as tools to accelerate the reduction of antibiotic consumption in pig farms.
- Implementation of the platform as a tool to support decision-making at the farm, company, sector, and administrative levels. It generates information on individual antibiotic consumption and how this consumption compares with that of other similar farms.
- Development of a guide for the responsible use of antibiotics in the swine sector, leaflets, posters, informative videos, presentations at events, courses for veterinarians in collaboration with the General Council of Veterinary Colleges of Spain, a self-managed course to train any professional in the sector and launch of the Pran Interporc award to recognize pig farms with the lowest level of antibiotic consumption within the framework of the program.
