Provacuno DSS Manure, an app for characterizing manure from beef cattle farms

Publication date: 27/11/2025

Description

This new app, which allows you to categorize farms and their manure based on information about its management, is free and is already available for both iOS and Android.

The Interprofessional Beef Organization (Provacuno) has developed, in collaboration with the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) and the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV), a mobile application of the DSS ( Decision Support System ) type that allows the categorization of farms and their manures based on information about their management.

Free of charge and already available for both iOS and Android, the Provacuno DSS Manure app offers farmers a report based on its own database characterizing manure from beef cattle, linking the type of management with different farm categories, deducing the production and composition of said manure in order to improve its agronomic and environmental management.

How does it work?

Using a pre-established decision tree, the system recognizes practices that help generate higher-quality amendments based on their composition . Furthermore, by saving the information, it serves as a database, allowing farmers to compare the different results after implementing recommended management practices on their farms.

The Provacuno DSS Manure app is part of a project whose main objective is to develop a Best Available Techniques proposal for advanced cattle manure agro-composting aimed at mitigating climate change. To implement this, a set of improved, low-cost, and viable cattle manure management protocols has been designed for short- to medium-term farm viability. All this information is compiled in a guide available on the Provacuno website.

At the level of agricultural soil management, the development of biofertilizers has also been tested through the use of agro-compost generated from cattle manure, thus advancing in the fertilizer sovereignty of the environment.

All these actions contribute positively to the reduction of ammonia and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, maintaining the sector's commitment to moving towards climate neutrality.
