More rigorous food inspections

Publication date: 15/04/2024

Description

The European Parliament (EP) has backed tougher food inspections throughout the supply chain , from producer to consumer. The new regulations, already informally agreed with the Council, aim to improve food traceability, combat fraud and restore consumer confidence in the food chain.

The agreement negotiated by MEPs with the Council of Ministers provides for surprise inspections in all sectors, stricter compliance with regulations against fraudulent or deceptive practices, requirements for the importation of animals and plants and controls by the Commission in Member States and third countries.
