The Minister of Agriculture , Luis Planas, has underlined the importance of technological innovation and digitalisation as keys to facing the challenges of the agricultural future , especially in the context of climate change. During the MED9 meeting of Agriculture Ministers in Cyprus , Planas highlighted Spain's experience in implementing efficient irrigation systems, which cover more than 80% of irrigated agricultural land in the country. This approach is part of an ambitious modernisation plan that seeks to optimise water use, improve energy efficiency and take advantage of non-conventional water resources, with a total investment of more than 2.4 billion euros until 2027.
Digitalization against drought
The minister also stressed the importance of new genomic techniques to develop plant varieties that are more resistant to drought , and urged the European Union to speed up the approval of the necessary legislation for their application, as is already happening in countries such as the United States and Australia. Planas stressed that these innovations not only strengthen the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), but also position agriculture as a key player in mitigating climate change.
