The post-2027 CAP commits the EU to an attractive farming sector for future generations. That commitment depends on the social sustainability of farm work yet labour shortages, premature exits and occupational health pressures already constrain the sector’s capacity to attract and retain people.

Building on the European Economic and Social Committee’s evaluation of the social aspects of the CAP (NAT/968) and its Opinion on Social Farming (NAT/983), the seminar will explore the main social challenges facing European agriculture. Each thematic session will begin with an expert presentation setting the scene, followed by a round-table discussion bringing together representatives of European institutions, farmers’ organisations, workers’ organisations, researchers and civil society to identify priorities and policy needs for the future.

The seminar is structured around five thematic sessions:

  • Supporting fair and decent farm incomes through the CAP.
  • Improving the attractiveness of agriculture and promoting generational renewal.
  • Reducing gender gaps and ensuring equal access to land and resources.
  • Strengthening social conditionality and improving the working conditions of seasonal and migrant workers.
  • Promoting social farming as a contributor to more inclusive and resilient rural communities.

The workshop will conclude with a synthesis of the key policy recommendations emerging from the discussions, providing input to the ongoing debate on the future development of the Common Agricultural Policy.

Exhibition launch and networking reception

Following the workshop (16:00–17:00 CEST), participants are warmly invited to attend the inauguration of the SafeHabitus exhibition on the Social Sustainability of Farming, followed by a networking reception. The exhibition will subsequently be hosted at the European Parliament in Strasbourg in October 2026 and showcases the realities, challenges and contributions of people working in agriculture across Europe.
