On September 10, 2025 , from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. , Unións Agrarias-UPA will hold the sixth edition of its technical conference "Demographic challenge in rural areas and promotion of generational change" , an online event that seeks to analyze and provide solutions to the abandonment of rural areas and agroforestry activities.

The activity aims to raise awareness about depopulation and the aging of rural areas , as well as provide participants with practical knowledge and management tools to promote farm continuity and ensure effective generational change.

Program of the day

  1. Introduction and territorial context
    Presentation of the conference and comparative analysis of the rural situation in Galicia, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, and Extremadura.
  2. Demographic challenge in rural areas
    Study of the structural causes of rural abandonment, population aging, youth loss, and key indicators.
  3. Abandonment of agroforestry activities
    Recent data on farm closures, changes in land area, and factors limiting continuity, with special attention to the gender perspective and the role of rural women.
  4. New models for transferring farms
    Introducing innovative solutions such as long-term leases, operating partnerships, intergenerational mentoring programs, land banks, and connection platforms.
  5. Success stories
    Real-life experiences from different autonomous communities show how family and non-family transfers, cooperation, and innovation have contributed to sustainable rural development.
  6. Measures for agroforestry sustainability and efficiency
    Strategies to modernize farms through digitalization, energy efficiency, agroecological practices, and public and technical support programs.
