Agrarian Unions-UPA organizes the ninth technical conference on demographic challenge and generational change in rural areas

On November 5, 2025 , Unións Agrarias-UPA will hold the ninth edition of the technical conference “Demographic challenge in rural areas and promotion of generational renewal” , an online event that seeks to promote environmental regeneration, generational renewal and the sustainability of agroforestry activities in rural territories.

This action is part of the program “Living Territories: Environmental Regeneration, Generational Change and Demographic Challenge” , developed in accordance with Royal Decree 251/2024, of March 12 , which regulates the subsidies intended for interventions of knowledge exchange, training and information and advisory services within the CAP Strategic Plan 2023-2027 .

A comprehensive look at the future of rural areas

During the event, which will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. , the main demographic and structural challenges affecting rural areas will be analyzed, as well as innovative strategies to curb abandonment and ensure generational renewal .

The program includes six thematic blocks that address everything from the territorial context to practical solutions:

1. Introduction and territorial context : Diagnosis of the rural environment in Galicia, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura, identifying similarities and differences.
2. Demographic challenge in rural areas : Population aging, loss of young agricultural workers, structural causes of abandonment and their socio-economic impacts.
3. Abandonment of agroforestry activities : Evolution of farms and areas, barriers to continuity and analysis from a gender perspective.
4. New models for transferring farms : Long-term lease agreements, limited liability companies, intergenerational mentoring programs, networking platforms and land banks.
5. Practical success stories : Real examples of family and non-family transfers, cooperatives and participatory rural development projects.
6. Measures for sustainability and agroforestry efficiency : Digitalization strategies, energy efficiency, agroecological approaches and technical support programs.

Training and commitment to the territory

The event, aimed at farmers, livestock breeders, technicians, advisors, cooperatives and rural entities , seeks to offer knowledge, experiences and management tools that facilitate the continuity of farms and the revitalization of the rural environment.
