LIFE INFUSION aims to demonstrate the viability of a circular economy approach to treating liquid digestate from the organic fraction of urban solid waste and leachate from landfills and recovering it for use as energy, biofertilizer, and irrigation water.
Landfill leachate and digestate liquid from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste are considered wastewater and must therefore be treated before disposal or recovery. The organic matter and ammonium they contain can be removed and reused, creating a circular economy around these waste streams.
- Demonstrate the technology at two urban solid waste treatment plants in Spain (Barcelona and Gijón).
- Reduce social, economic and environmental impacts.
- Reduce the economic impact utilizing excess heat on-site for cogeneration, regenerating membranes and skipping the composting step.
- Reduce environmental impact by producing renewable energy (biomethane), recovering biofertilizers (sludge and ammonium salts), using regenerated membranes, and using treated water for irrigation in water-scarce areas.
The main expected outcome is the generation of resources from the treatment of landfill leachate and digestate liquid created from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste. The project will help implement the circular economy in the wastewater sector and assist wastewater treatment facilities in meeting the requirements of the EU Water Framework Directive and water reuse regulations.
