Description

Three countries, one common goal: to combat water scarcity in Southern Europe through sustainable methods. The SOLLAGUA project is co-financed by the Interreg SUDOE 2021-2027 regional development program with €1,389,232.10. Water is the most ubiquitous element in our lives, yet it is becoming increasingly scarce, especially in semi-arid regions. Droughts, water stress, heat waves, water cuts, and water transfers due to lack of rainfall are just some of the effects of climate change. This is something Spaniards, Portuguese, and French people are experiencing more intensely than their European neighbors due to their geographical and climatic conditions.

The SOLLAGUA initiative, which will run until the end of 2026, is driven by a consortium of ten main entities and twenty-six partner entities from these three European countries. Led by the University of Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, they will all cooperate to provide a more resilient water supply in areas with high levels of water stress and, in turn, promote the development of a circular economy based on the reuse of local wastewater, while also providing an alternative to traditional end-of-pipe installations.

Furthermore, through water-oriented living labs (WoLLs), which are innovation ecosystems open to all project stakeholders, a comprehensive participatory approach will be ensured. Water scarcity in Southern Europe is a complex challenge requiring coordinated and multifaceted action. Combining technological, political, and educational strategies can help mitigate the effects of water scarcity and ensure a sustainable supply for future generations.

It is crucial that governments, businesses, and society work together to address this problem and protect one of the planet's most vital resources. SOLLAGUA will do its part to make this happen.

Objectives

Its main objective is to promote nature-based solutions (NBS) for water reuse in rural areas of Spain, Portugal and France.
