The Observatory publishes the update of the study of the value chain of extra virgin olive oil and a report on innovative foods

The plenary session of the Food Chain Observatory meeting today has continued the analysis of the situation of food prices and consumption, and has approved the update of the study of the value chain of extra virgin olive oil for the 2020/2021 campaign. and a report on consumer behavior towards innovative products.
In the plenary session, chaired by the general director of the Food Industry, José Miguel Herrero, there was the participation of representatives of the General Administration of the State, the autonomous communities and all the links in the food chain, different presentations were made. analysis and studies. During the meeting, the importance of this forum for dialogue, analysis and exchange of information on the situation of the agri-food market was highlighted.
Regarding the analysis of food consumption in the first quarter of 2023, it has been shown that the structure of the shopping basket does not vary significantly compared to the previous quarter, and a greater consumption of eggs and meat is observed. A smaller number of shopping baskets have also been observed, but with higher amounts, in which the consumption of retail brands gains weight.
Regarding food price increases, it is concluded that, in the first 12 weeks of the year, they are in the same line as in the same periods of the previous year . However, starting from week 13, the last week of March, the price increases are more contained. Finally, it has been confirmed that the consumer now takes price into account more when choosing products than before the inflation situation.
The representative of the National Institute of Statistics has presented the evolution of consumer prices for food products in 2022 and so far this year until the month of March, as well as the advance data for the month of April.
Regarding the study on innovative products, belonging to the Trust Climate Barometer of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, it is observed that interest in them has increased by 23% in just two years, mainly among women and the age group between 25 and 55 years old.
