Description
The project aims to optimize water use in semi-arid agriculture through strategies such as controlled, precision, and subsurface deficit irrigation. Water-soil-plant relationships will be studied to improve water efficiency and sustain production under conditions of scarcity.

Results
A decision-making system (DSS) based on maximum permissible depletion thresholds (MPTs) is validated using soil moisture sensors to improve water use efficiency in various crops. In ornamental plants, the capacity of dendrometric indices (DIs) for diagnosing water and environmental stress and for managing irrigation is evaluated. Shading induces early harvesting in lime trees, and in Cistus heterophyllus, it improves photosynthetic efficiency and reduces leaf temperature. The application of a bacterial biostimulant to beans mitigates the effects of water stress while improving the production of bioactive metabolites.
