Using cover crops to improve soil health and much more
Description
Lecture in the 'Seminars: Research and Employment' series to commemorate World Soil Day. It will be given by Professor Chiquinquirá Hontoria on December 1st at 12:30 pm in the auditorium of the Agricultural Engineering building. This activity is recognized in the ETSIAAB Passport.
Every December 5th, World Soil Day is celebrated, a day to raise global awareness about the role soils play in agricultural development, ecosystem functions, and food security. The Higher Technical School of Agricultural, Food and Biosystems Engineering (ETSIAAB) commemorates this day with a talk, part of the 'Seminars: Research and Employment' series, which will address the importance of soil health and explain how the use of cover crops can improve soil properties and increase the resilience of agroecosystems to the climate crisis.
Under the title "Using Cover Crops to Improve Soil Health and Much More," the course will be taught by Chiquinquirá Hontoria, a professor in the Soil Science area of the Department of Agricultural Production, a member of the Center for Studies and Research for Agricultural and Environmental Risk Management (CEIGRAM) , and a member of the CASAM research group (Soil Quality and Environmental Applications) at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM). Professor Hontoria's scientific work has focused on evaluating how soil use and management affect soil health from a holistic perspective. Her research lines are particularly oriented toward carbon sequestration and soil-microbiota-plant interactions, with the aim of promoting more sustainable agroecosystems and facilitating the recovery of degraded soils.
During the event, the prizes for the World Soil Day 2025 poster competition will be awarded, as well as the Best Undergraduate Thesis and Best Master's Thesis Awards on soil management in Agricultural Production, a recognition that highlights the academic work carried out by students in the area of sustainability and responsible soil management.
It will be held on Monday , December 1st, from 12:30 to 13:30, in the auditorium of the Agrícolas building.
