Description

The Andalusian Institute for Agricultural, Fisheries and Food Research and Training ( IFAPA ) has announced that the 13th edition of the Andalusian School of Shepherds will take place in Cortegana (Huelva) in 2026, following an open application process that attracted 12 candidates from regions with extensive livestock farming. This is the first time this training program has been held in the province of Huelva.

The selected proposal, promoted by the Cortegana Town Council, COAG Huelva, and the ABLANSE association, has received broad institutional and social support, including backing from the region itself and neighboring Portugal. The Sierra de Huelva region, characterized by its dehesa (pastureland), mountain, and chestnut grove ecosystems, is notable for its diverse livestock farming and strong commitment to sustainable practices and organic certification.

Training to strengthen generational renewal

The School of Shepherds is an initiative of the Regional Government of Andalusia designed to transmit traditional shepherding knowledge and the key skills needed to meet the challenges of modern extensive livestock farming. Its main objective is to promote generational renewal , support professionalization, and highlight the value of a sector that is strategic for land management and the conservation of the natural environment.

The program includes training in livestock handling, business management, animal welfare, sustainability, digitalization, and other essential topics. It also allows students to access grants for entering the agricultural sector.
