Online conference on the demographic challenge and generational change in rural areas

On August 5, 2025 , the sixth edition of the technical conference "Demographic challenge in rural areas and promotion of generational change" will be held in online format, organized by Unións Agrarias UPA .

This conference aims to analyze the causes of the abandonment of rural areas and agroforestry activities and propose concrete solutions to combat depopulation, promote generational renewal, and ensure the continuity of agricultural and forestry operations. The event is aimed at professionals, young rural people, advisors, sector organizations, and anyone interested in rural development.

Program of the day:

1. Introduction and territorial context
   • Analysis of the situation in rural areas in Galicia, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, and Extremadura.
   • Identification of similarities, differences and common challenges.
2. Demographic challenge in rural areas
   • Population aging, loss of rural youth and structural causes of abandonment.
   • Social, economic and territorial consequences.
3. Abandonment of agroforestry activities
   • Evolution of the number of farms, agricultural and forest areas.
   • Limiting factors and analysis from a gender perspective.
4. New models for transferring farms
   • Long-term leases, limited partnerships, land banks, intergenerational mentoring, among others.
5. Success stories
   • Real-life accounts and inspiring experiences of participatory rural development and transfer in various autonomous communities.
6. Measures for agroforestry sustainability and efficiency
   • Digitalization, energy efficiency, agroecological practices, training, and technical support.
