Abstract

This project seeks to promote the efficient and sustainable use of water, an essential resource for the livestock sector, whose scarcity would affect both the economy and the production of essential goods such as meat and milk. Its relevance is technical, economic, and environmental, as it would improve water use on dairy farms, ensuring the sustainability and continuity of this activity in rural areas.

This impact will not only contribute to environmental preservation but also to strengthening local economies and establishing a rural population. The project is also aligned with the Andalusian Innovation Strategy (RIS3) by promoting digitalization, the use of sensors, and data processing, contributing to the development of new agricultural processes that mitigate the effects of climate change in southern Spain.

The impact will be visible not only on participating farms but throughout Andalusia, as the results will be implemented regionally, benefiting the agricultural and livestock sector as a whole and boosting sustainability and productivity.

Description of activities

The project focuses on several key activities to ensure its success. It will begin with overall project coordination and management, followed by the collection and analysis of previous experiences with sensor applications and the digitalization of the water cycle in the livestock sector. The farms that will be part of the project will then be selected and characterized to better understand their contexts.

Subsequently, sensorization, data collection, and water footprint calculation will be carried out on these farms. In addition, a provision and exploitation platform will be created to facilitate the use of the collected data. Finally, the results obtained will be communicated, and a final report will be drafted summarizing all the project's findings.

Objectives

To determine the main contributions to water consumption on dairy farms, expressed as volumetric water footprint, as well as the impacts associated with the production of one kilogram of milk corrected for fat and protein.

This general objective is broken down into the following specific objectives:

  • Expand knowledge of water uses to consolidate integrated water resource management and minimize the impact of climate change.
  • Improve governance in water use management through the digitalization of hydraulic networks.
  • Determine water management indicator parameters.
  • Integrate and interpret data obtained by measuring devices.
