Abstract

SAT4CARBON is an innovation project focused on developing and applying in three pilot areas a methodology to estimate carbon fixation by remote sensing in silvopastoral systems.

Description

The project develops an operational and scalable methodology for calculating carbon in biomass and soil at a local scale using remote sensing and GIS in three pilot areas of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria to establish best silvopastoral practices in the management of forests for carbon fixation through training and information on applicable standards and certification methodologies and identifying ways of marketing carbon in the voluntary market.

Objectives

The main objective of this innovation project is to develop and apply in three pilot areas a methodology to estimate carbon fixation by remote sensing in silvopastoral systems at a local scale, understanding the local scale as the management unit of these systems (municipality, pasture association, public forest, etc.). This will subsequently allow for improved forest management with the aim of fixing more carbon and, ultimately, establishing the channels that allow the fixed carbon stock to be economically valorised.

Results
  1. An operational and scalable methodology for calculating Carbon in biomass and soil at a local scale using remote sensing and GIS.
  2. Annual information on carbon stock and flow in three pilot areas of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria.
  3. Best silvopastoral practices in forest management for carbon sequestration.
  4. That potential users have the necessary training to increase and valorise carbon sequestration. R5. Information on applicable standards and certification methodologies.
  5. Identification of carbon marketing channels in the voluntary market.
  6. Knowledge Transfer Strategy, Collaboration, Dissemination and Project Scope (Dissemination).
