SAT4CARBON is an innovation project focused on developing and applying in three pilot areas a methodology to estimate carbon fixation by remote sensing in silvopastoral systems.
The project develops an operational and scalable methodology for calculating carbon in biomass and soil at the local scale using remote sensing and GIS in three pilot areas in Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria to establish best silvopastoral practices in forest management for carbon sequestration through training and information on applicable standards and certification methodologies and by identifying ways to trade carbon on the voluntary market.
The main objective of this innovative project is to develop and implement in three pilot areas a methodology for estimating carbon sequestration using remote sensing in silvopastoral systems at the local scale, understanding the local scale as the management unit of these systems (municipality, pasture association, public forest, etc.). This will subsequently allow for improved forest management with the goal of sequestering more carbon and, ultimately, establishing channels for economically valorizing the sequestered carbon stock.
The expected results of the project are:
- R1. An operational and scalable methodology for calculating carbon in biomass and soil at local scale using remote sensing and GIS.
- R2. Annual information on carbon stock and flow in three pilot areas of Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria.
- R3. Best silvopastoral practices in forest management for carbon sequestration.
- R4. That potential users have the necessary training to increase and maximize carbon sequestration.
- R5. Information on applicable certification standards and methodologies.
- R6. Identification of carbon trading channels in the voluntary market.
- R7 Knowledge Transfer Strategy, Collaboration, dissemination and scope of the project (dissemination).
