Operational Group: Improving the valorization and revitalization of stone pine cone and pine nut production by grouping the production chain and mechanizing its use

Description

This project has assessed the product and studied the pine nut market by collecting official publications and statistics. This has been complemented and verified by direct consultation through interviews and surveys with various experts and stakeholders in the sector.

An assessment of the resource and productive potential of the stone pine in Catalonia has also been carried out by creating a group of experts and defining productive and harvesting scenarios based on the surface area, the quality of the season, and the productive potential of the stone pine. Different mechanized harvesting systems have been proposed depending on the slope of the land and its productive potential.

Objectives

The project's objective is to establish an Operational Group to promote the production and marketing of pine nuts in Catalonia, to increase the economic value of stone pine stands and plantations and enable economically sustainable forest management.

To this end, forest owners and their associations, research centers, and companies in the subsector are working together, and a working group is being created with stakeholders from across the entire chain. Therefore, the project has been developed from a multidisciplinary perspective, encompassing forestry engineering and socioeconomics.
