Reclaimed water is a complementary water resource to conventional sources, increasingly used in contexts of scarcity and drought. However, the reclaimed technologies employed do not allow for nutrient control when used in agriculture and are sensitive to variations in the quality of the treated water.
The project aims to implement an innovative technology for the agricultural use of reclaimed water, based on two previous EU-funded projects: Treat&Use and RichWater. Both projects developed a water treatment and regeneration technology with an integrated irrigation system and demonstrated its ability to meet quality standards for use in agriculture.
In order to make the solution competitive, the Operational Group intends to expand the number of trials on subtropical crops under real-life conditions in the La Axarquía region (Málaga), the Costa Tropical region (Granada), and other regions in the region.
- Energy optimization.
- Definition of irrigation patterns adapted for reclaimed water.
- Validation of an automated nutrient introduction system that prevents soil contamination and optimizes the use of water and fertilizers.
- Establishment of a water management tool that combines conventional and reclaimed water.
- Training for farmers in irrigation with reclaimed water.
- Organization of awareness-raising activities to promote its safe use.
