Reclaimed water is a water resource that is complementary to conventional sources and is increasingly used in contexts of scarcity and drought. However, the regeneration technologies used do not allow for nutrient control when used in agriculture and are sensitive to variations in the quality of the treated water.
The aim is to implement an innovative technology for the agricultural use of reclaimed water based on two previous EU-funded projects: Treat&Use and RichWater. Both projects have developed a water treatment and regeneration technology with an integrated irrigation system and have demonstrated their ability to meet quality standards for use in agriculture.
In order to make the solution competitive, the Operational Group intends to increase the number of trials in subtropical crops under real conditions in the region of La Axarquía (Málaga), Costa Tropical (Granada) and other areas in the region.
Other objectives are:
- Energy optimization, definition of irrigation patterns adapted to regenerated water.
- Validation of an automated system for the introduction of nutrients that prevents soil contamination and optimizes the use of water and fertilizers and establishment of a water management tool that combines conventional and regenerated water.
- It will train farmers in irrigation with reclaimed water and organize awareness-raising activities to promote its safe use.
