Description
FAGUS promotes, through innovation in forest management and technical development in product classification and characterization, the revaluation of beech wood by generating a local bioeconomy.
Objectives
- Improving forestry applied to beech
- Empowering owners, managers, and loggers with innovative tools for the economic valorization of beech forests
- Implement industry-validated classification technologies and standards for the different products existing in the forest-industry value chain
- Develop a new LVL structural product from beech wood veneers
- Create a trans-regional Hague Roundtable that includes all stakeholders in the value chain.
Results
- Quantitative inventory and obtaining a representative sample of beech stands at the national level
- Development of tools for calculating and classifying beech wood volumes based on the morphological characteristics of standing trees, using airborne and ground-based LiDAR and photogrammetry. Creation of tools for assigning the technological quality of beech trees, forest stands, and standing trees using non-destructive techniques.
- Standardization of potential beech wood qualities according to target products along the forestry-industry value chain
- Creation of a new beech LVL product for use in structures
- Development of an interregional table for the promotion of beech wood with the different stakeholders involved
