The ECOGAN computer system for information transfer shows a 10.6% reduction in ammonia emissions
Description
ECOGAN , the computer system for transferring information developed by MAPA in coordination with MITECO , has allowed the quantification of a 10.6% reduction in national ammonia emissions. This is the second consecutive year that this digital tool has confirmed compliance with the ammonia emission ceiling set for our country.
Digital management of agricultural and livestock data
The information collected by ECOGAN on practices carried out on livestock farms has made it possible to verify the implementation of improvements made in fertilisation practices , animal feed and other production techniques. It has been confirmed that Spain not only complies for the second consecutive year with the commitment to reductions set out in the “ceiling directive”, but also achieves a reduction three times higher than that required for the period 2020-2030.
The information collected by the ECOGAN system is transferred annually to the Spanish Inventory System , which calculates emissions of ammonia, nitrous oxide and other nitrogen gases, thus allowing the environmental effort made by the livestock sector to be realized.
The modules for white pigs (with the information from which the aforementioned reduction of 10.6% in ammonia emissions has been determined), laying birds (laying and breeding hens) and meat birds (chickens and breeders) are currently operational in the ECOGAN system. The data collected in the poultry modules have not yet been evaluated. The dairy and fattening cattle modules are being developed during 2024. And in 2025, the suckler cow and meat bird (turkey) modules will be implemented.
