Advanced course on low-impact aquaculture
Description
The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (IAMZ–CIHEAM Zaragoza) will hold the advanced course “Low Impact Aquaculture” from May 25 to 28, 2026 , a face-to-face training course that will take place at IRTA La Ràpita (Tarragona, Spain) .
In recent decades, aquaculture has incorporated new technologies and production approaches that allow for progress towards more sustainable models, with less pressure on sensitive environments. In this context, the course will address systems and solutions such as Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) , Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) , and aquaponics , focusing on circularity , efficiency , and waste reduction.
Training objectives
The course will review the fundamentals of RAS, IMTA, and aquaponics systems, and will present examples and case studies applicable to small-scale economies , especially useful for isolated coastal and rural environments with economic constraints. The aim is to guide practitioners toward more efficient, circular, and sustainable practices.
Who is it for?
This activity is aimed at aquaculture professionals —such as technical advisors, researchers, and fish farmers —interested in production technologies under controlled conditions and with low environmental impact . The course will be taught in English and will require active participation from attendees.
Methodology
The program will have a predominantly practical approach, combining theoretical sessions with applied exercises , case studies and technical visits to facilities, also encouraging the exchange of experiences between participants.
