Abstract
LANDFEED will focus on the valorization of underutilized waste from the agri-food, forestry, urban, and natural resources industries, implementing circular and local solutions that enable its valorization through integration into a circular framework, and producing innovative biofertilizers to improve European self-sufficiency.
Description

Europe faces significant challenges in waste management from the agri-food industry, forestry, and urban areas. Inefficient waste management leads to environmental pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of natural resources. Furthermore, traditional fertilizers contribute to soil degradation and water pollution. There is an urgent need for sustainable solutions to convert waste into valuable resources.

The EU-funded LANDFEED project aims to address this problem by generating value from underutilized waste through circular and local solutions. By converting waste into innovative biofertilizers, LANDFEED will improve Europe's self-sufficiency and reduce its environmental impact. Demonstrations of these technologies will be rolled out across Europe, promoting soil health and biodiversity. LANDFEED's business model will ensure that these solutions are replicable and implementable across the continent.

Objectives

LANDFEED will focus on creating value from underutilized waste from the agri-food industry, forestry, urban and natural waste, implementing circular and local solutions that allow for the valorization of waste by placing it within a circular framework, and producing innovative biofertilizers to improve Europe's self-sufficiency. In addition to optimizing and implementing innovative nutrient recovery technologies, work will be done on a new generation of coatings for these biofertilizers, capable of improving their efficiency through controlled nutrient release mechanisms. In this way, LANDFEED will contribute to better management of the fertilizer supplied, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions and a reduced impact on environmental water resources.

LANDFEED will ensure that the project's solutions and results are leveraged locally through the different use cases. The use cases will consider all the links in the value chain that will participate as beacons, serving as demonstrators and disseminators of the technologies, results, and applications developed during the project. These use cases will also contribute to the objectives of the Soil Strategy by enabling the restoration of soil health by enhancing its specific and functional biodiversity. At the global level, the entire business model will be defined, with the aim of maximizing the replicability of these Use Cases and facilitating their implementation in other European areas and regions.
