Description

Decision-makers in the agricultural and forestry sectors often struggle to implement optimal sustainable practices due to cognitive biases and behavioral inertia. These challenges are compounded by the complexity of choice environments and a lack of incentives for change. As a result, even well-intentioned policies may fall short of their sustainability goals. To address this problem, the EU-funded ForestAgriGreenNudge project presents innovative solutions.

ForestAgriGreenNudge focuses on improving decision-making through Green Nudges, which consist of subtle adjustments to how decisions are formulated and presented. The project will evaluate the effectiveness and ethical standards of existing nudges, then test and refine them in real-world situations. Successful strategies will be compiled in iNUDGE Academy, an online tool designed to guide stakeholders in adopting sustainable practices.

Objectives

Behavioral and cognitive biases reduce decision makers' ability to adopt the best solutions among available alternatives. Drawing on preexisting insights in psychology about priming, "nudges" are defined as gentle interventions in a decision maker's choice architecture (default choice, information, presentation, framing, etc.) that improve the likelihood of optimal choices. ForestAgriGreenNudges will first review initiatives and projects that explicitly or implicitly use Green Nudges to promote the use of sustainable practices in agriculture and forestry. It will then evaluate each type of nudge according to two sets of criteria:

  1. Criteria associated with effectiveness in promoting the use of desired practices over a sufficiently long period.
  2. Criteria dictated by ethical principles and good practices (transparency, awareness of nudges, participation/self-regulation, actor specificity, etc.) that guarantee the quality of the implementation process.

The nudges will then be field-tested and evaluated on a grid, reflecting the desired effectiveness and quality of implementation. The set of successful nudges will be enriched with innovative nudges based on information on the attitudes and strategies of actors along the entire value chain. The resulting set of initiatives, along with their corresponding implementation guidelines, and the business models and market conditions that favor their application in agroforestry, will be compiled into an online tool (iNUDGE Academy), whose target audience will include policymakers, wholesalers, retailers, farmers, and foresters.

The tool will associate each nudge with implementation rules, potential application domains, and potential risks in terms of balancing effectiveness and good practices. Disseminating the results to agricultural and forestry experts, policymakers, and stakeholders along the value chain will maximize the project's impact, improving the adoption of sustainable practices on farms and in the forest.
