Abstract
EU-FarmBook will connect numerous AKIS stakeholders, provide training materials for advisors, and serve educational institutions.
Description

Two EU projects, EURAKNOS and EUREKA, developed a European online, open-source knowledge platform on practical solutions for agriculture and forestry. The EU-funded EU-FarmBook project will further develop this digital platform, facilitating the search and sharing of practical knowledge on agriculture and forestry from regional, national, and EU research and innovation projects. This is the first long-term EU-wide digital knowledge platform.

The EU-FarmBook platform will connect numerous AKIS stakeholders, provide training materials for advisors, and serve educational institutions. Regarding dissemination, EU-FarmBook will establish links with traditional channels, such as agricultural journals. The overall objective is for the platform to foster knowledge exchange, interaction, and collaboration among users, ultimately leading to innovation for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture and forestry.

Description of activities

To support the transition to sustainable agriculture and forestry, EU-FarmBook is creating a multilingual digital meeting place that helps farmers, foresters, and other rural stakeholders find innovative solutions to the daily challenges they face. During the first reporting period, the EU-FarmBook team worked on the pre-launch of the online digital platform.

On 8 February 2024, an exclusive first look was given to EU project coordinators and agricultural journalists, as well as EU, regional, and national policymakers. The EU-FarmBook online platform facilitates the search and exchange of practical knowledge on forestry and agriculture. The project's technical team presented their material upload process, the platform's current features, and planned future improvements.

Contextual description

The EURAKNOS project, as currently implemented, has analyzed the knowledge of 28 linked Horizon-funded Thematic Networks (RTs) and Operational Groups (OGs) and developed a vision and guidelines for a digital knowledge repository for agricultural and forestry practices at EU level. EUREKA has continued this effort by examining 120 Horizon-funded Risk Management (RM) projects under the EIP-AGRI framework and developing a proof-of-concept for such a repository, based on the EURAKNOS project results. EU-FarmBook will leverage the EURAKNOS and EUREKA outcomes, optimizing the FAIRness of the data collected on the platform and incorporating necessary functionalities based on user needs, such as peer-to-peer interaction and content assessment tools.

Objectives

The current state of the art is that the EURAKNOS project has analyzed the knowledge of 28 Horizon-funded Thematic Networks (TNs) and linked Operational Groups (OGs) and developed a vision and guidelines for a digital knowledge repository for EU-wide agricultural and forestry practices. EUREKA has continued this effort by examining 120 Horizon-funded Master's projects within EIP-AGRI and developing a proof-of-concept for such a knowledge repository based on the EURAKNOS project results.

EU-FarmBook will capitalize on the results of EURAKNOS and EUREKA, making the data incorporated into the platform more FAIR and adding necessary functionalities to the platform based on user needs, such as interactive peer-to-peer interaction and user content evaluation tools. Furthermore, EU-FarmBook will ensure links with traditional dissemination channels, such as agricultural journals, on-farm demonstration activities, and training and education initiatives.

Therefore, EU-FarmBook will work closely with journalists' associations (ENAJ), educational and training institutions, and strengthen ties with the EIP-AGRI Service Point. The effort will also expand beyond H2020 and Horizon Europe-funded projects and GOs, through linkages and interoperability with national and regional initiatives. Intensive dialogue will be maintained throughout the project with AKIS coordination offices and CAP networks in all Member States.

The objective is for the platform concept to evolve during the first phase of the project into an exploitable product that stimulates exchange and collaboration among AKIS stakeholders at the EU level. The targeted and efficient management of data and information to support agricultural and forestry practices from different sources will not only support the CAP but also the objectives and targets of the Green Deal and Farm to Fork, ultimately resulting in innovation for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable agriculture and forestry.

Results

Web platform that encourages knowledge sharing, interaction, and collaboration among users.
