Valuing, protecting, and restoring nature is essential. This is the goal of the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, a comprehensive plan to conserve biodiversity in Europe. The EU-funded Biodiversa-plus project is crucial to the strategy's successful implementation. Bringing together 75 organizations from 37 countries, including environmental authorities, research ministries, funding organizations, and environmental protection agencies, the project will work to coordinate research programs and mobilize key partners for biodiversity research and innovation.
Specifically, it will improve monitoring, generate practical knowledge, expand the evidence base, and justify conservation. It will also provide scientific support for policymaking.
As one of the core actions of the EU 2030 Biodiversity Strategy, the European Biodiversity Partnership (Biodiversa+) will coordinate research programs between the EU and its Member States and associated countries, mobilizing environmental authorities as key partners to implement biodiversity research and innovation, along with research ministries, funding organizations, and environmental protection agencies (75 organizations from 37 countries). Biodiversa+ has five overall objectives:
- Improve monitoring of biodiversity and ecosystem services across Europe (status and trends).
- Generate practical knowledge to address direct and indirect drivers of biodiversity loss.
- Expand and enhance the evidence base and accelerate the development and widespread deployment of NBS to address societal challenges across Europe
- Present business cases for biodiversity conservation and restoration.
- Ensuring efficient, science-based support for biodiversity policymaking in Europe.
Biodiversa+ will achieve these objectives:
- Establishing a pan-European network of harmonized monitoring systems, leveraging existing national/regional monitoring systems, building capacity to establish new systems, and contributing information to the EC Biodiversity Knowledge Hub.
- Coordinate research programs between the EU and its Member States and associated countries, thereby ensuring the joint creation and implementation of a long-term pan-European research agenda.
- Contribute to science-based methodologies to account for and potentially value ecosystem services and natural capital, and to assess corporate dependence and impact on biodiversity.
- Better linking R&I programs with the political sphere, providing greater input into policymaking and improving the evaluation of policy effectiveness. In doing so, Biodiversa+ will help ensure that, by 2030, nature in Europe is back on a path to recovery and that, by 2050, people live in harmony with nature.
