AGROFORESTRA Biodiversity Foundation Project: Agroforestry Mosaic and Climate Change

Description

The implementation of agroforestry management is one of the strategies for mitigating the effects of climate change in this part of the Mediterranean region. Land-use change patterns in the Mediterranean region are developing at a rapid pace. In the north, agricultural crops have been replaced by poorly managed young forests that accumulate biomass, with the resulting risk of fire. This initiative aims to reverse this situation.

Description of activities

To achieve the project's objective, the evolution of agricultural activity over the last 60 years in the areas targeted by the initiative will be assessed, and the change in forest and agricultural land use between 1956 and 2015 will be quantified. Pilot areas will also be characterized and located where, thanks to land stewardship agreements with the owners, agro-forestry management will be carried out through the extraction of forest resources and the recovery of traditional crops and terraces (olive trees or cereal fields).

In Tarragona, native olive trees will be restored, while in Castellón, grain fields will be reestablished. Finally, an awareness campaign will be launched targeting the public about the project's objective and climate change in the municipalities of Flix, Riba-roja d'Ebre (Tarragona), and Pobla de Benifassà (Castellón).

Objectives

The initiative aims to restore traditional crops (specifically olive groves and grain fields) in forested areas in the provinces of Tarragona and Castellón, in order to increase the availability of water resources and promote landscape heterogeneity (mosaic effect) in terrestrial ecosystems. It also seeks to curb the effects of erosion by restoring traditional dry-stone terraces.
