Abstract

Given the environmental and social consequences of the prevailing agri-food model, it is necessary to seek new models that promote environmentally beneficial practices. At the international level, a firm step has been taken toward the search for innovative alternatives that delve deeper into how agroecology addresses the challenges of global change and increasingly urbanized societies.

In Spain, and particularly in the CM, it is a term that is gaining increasing popularity in the productive sector, but it is still far from being recognized, and there is a broad debate about its overlap with organic farming and agroecology.

Description
  • Evaluate and enhance available knowledge about agroecological practices that contribute to environmental sustainability (through the maintenance of ecosystem services).
  • Production, delving into the current state of recognition of agroecology in the productive sector.
  • Expand the knowledge and principles that agroecology incorporates to all consumers so that they prioritize local and seasonal purchases.
  • To further develop and negotiate policies and incentives in CM that promote agroecological practices.
Objectives

To expand scientific knowledge about agroecology as a discipline and practice that contributes to the sustainability of agricultural activity, ultimately assessing its current impact and future viability as an integrated rural development strategy in the Community of Madrid.

Results
  • Increase scientific knowledge of agroecology to improve production, compile traditional knowledge, systematize economically viable experiences, provide formal training, etc.: creating a knowledge repository.
  • Explore the relationship between organic farming and agroecology, and their potential complementarity. Provide training for technicians and new producers in agroecology.
  • Improve partnerships and connections between different stakeholders related to agroecology through annual meetings and dissemination documents.
  • Increase the visibility of the sector through organized visits and annual awards.
  • Increase agroecological demand through consumer awareness campaigns.
