Description

Sustainable soil use is essential for ensuring long-term agricultural productivity, protecting the environment, and combating climate change. Agricultural soils are exposed to various threats, such as erosion, salinization, and loss of organic matter, which requires that professionals in the sector have up-to-date tools to implement effective conservation practices.

In this course, participants will acquire fundamental knowledge about sustainable soil management, learning strategies to improve soil quality, foster resilience in production systems, and contribute to the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

Course objectives

  • Understand the basic principles of sustainable soil management.
  • Identify the main threats that affect soil health.
  • Learn agricultural practices that promote soil conservation and regeneration.
  • Design strategies that combine agricultural production with soil protection.

Methodology

The course will be taught online via videoconference. To obtain certification, participants must attend 85% of the sessions and pass a final assessment. Attendance will be verified via live streaming with their first and last name.

  • Introduction to sustainable management of agricultural soils

  • Main ecological functions of the soil.
  • Concept of sustainable management and its relevance today.
  • Soil health diagnosis
  • Physical, chemical and biological indicators of the soil.
  • Common threats to agricultural soils: erosion, salinization, compaction and contamination.
  • Tools for soil condition assessment.
  • Sustainable management practices
  • Conservation agriculture: crop rotation, mulching, and no-till farming.
  • Nutrient management. Efficient use of fertilizers and organic amendments.
  • Integrated pest and disease control that minimizes impact on the soil.
  • Strategies to increase organic matter and improve soil structure.

This course is designed for agricultural engineers, agricultural technicians, agronomy students, and industry professionals interested in improving soil management on their farms or in their work areas.
