Description
The dairy cattle sector represents 4.5% of Spain's final agricultural production. Within livestock production, it is the fourth most important sector in the country's economy, behind the pork, poultry, and beef sectors, representing approximately 11.7% of final livestock production in 2018.
The NOVISCAN operational group was created to conduct genetic studies on a representative number of dairy farms to identify genes that enhance herd efficiency, with a special focus on the rearing phase of Spanish dairy cattle.
Description of activities
- Establish a custom selection index and update project animal scores.
- Maximize farm efficiency through an embryo transfer program that enhances the use of elite genotypes for selection.
- Establish ultrasound indicators that allow for early monitoring of the herd's health performance, with special attention to those pathologies that impair the growth of heifers during their early stages.
Objectives
- To establish an efficient breeding program on dairy cattle farms, based on establishing new selection indices through genetic optimization of the herd and early monitoring of heifers by incorporating innovative ultrasound analysis techniques.
- Analyze the incorporation of strategic measures that can generate a positive impact on feed efficiency and the economic viability of dairy cattle farms.
