The main objective of this project is to design and develop a sustainable, industrial-scale biochar production model from plant waste in Catalonia.
To achieve the main objective, it is necessary to develop the following specific objectives grouped into three main axes:
- 1st line of action: Background and assessment of industrial implementation in Catalonia
- To identify and compare technological and industrial precedents in biochar generation in other countries, as well as the applications and uses found in different sectors.
- To gather and consolidate all previous experiences with biochar production and application in Catalonia. C. To evaluate the implementation of the most appropriate industrial technology for the specific needs.
- 2nd axis of action: characterization, production and application of Biochar
- Standardize biochar production by establishing parameters and regulations
local production in Catalonia in order to apply biochar with a quality guarantee
sustainable traceability. - Standardize the product in terms of physicochemical properties of biochar that can assist with the international certification program proposed by the International Biochar Initiative (IBI Biochar).
- Development of a guide with recommendations for use based on the agricultural problems identified and possible territorial and technical improvements in Catalonia.
- Assess the implementation of industrial technology most appropriate to the territorial and technical characteristics of Catalonia.
- Standardize biochar production by establishing parameters and regulations
- 3rd axis of action: Applications, dissemination and viability of the Biochar application
- Disseminate the experiences developed and the knowledge generated.
- Conduct a study to establish the economic viability of production and its implementation as a service for the territory and/or administration of Biochar.
The project evaluates and standardizes the use of biochar in different areas as a response to productive and environmental problems, aiming to achieve sustainable development in agricultural areas within the framework of Law 3/2019, of June 17.
Therefore, the main conclusions expected from this project are the evaluation of the implementation in Catalonia of a sustainable-scale production model for biochar from plant waste, allowing for the standardization of biochar production and its physiochemical properties, with the development of a user guide to eliminate any application problems and the impact of certain agricultural or forestry waste in Catalonia.
The specific improvements expected at the conclusion of the project have three areas of action:
- In the environmental field: ? Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions due to increased carbon sequestration in soils. ? Reduction of soil erosion and increased fertility due to an increase in the development of soil structure and quality. ? Reduction of nitrate leaching in areas fertilized with slurry. ? Retention of pollutants such as heavy metals or organic substances with the use of biochar as a biofilter. ? Reduction of peat by using biochar as a substrate for plant growth in gardening and horticultural plantations. ? Increasing sustainability in agricultural water use, leveraging the capacity of the Biochar water reservoir.
- In the technological field: ? Establishing an economic valuation of biochar production and use ? Developing standards for biochar production to generate safe and sustainable products with high ethical standards.
- In the socioeconomic sphere: ? Revaluation of some agricultural, livestock, or forestry products in order to improve sustainability and life in agricultural areas
