Description

PRORURAL promotes the design and verification of a new, profitable business model for the sustainable use of public forests with innovative forest products, thereby generating wealth and employment and conserving the forest.

Objectives
  • To design in detail a forestry business model that is economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially responsible, tested by potential clients, ready to implement and replicable in other regions of the country.
  • Provide consumers with sufficient traceability information to make informed and responsible purchasing decisions based on social and environmental criteria.
Results
  • Design of a mixed-ownership business model for the use of high-value public forests. The economic viability of the business model has been supported, and the minimization of environmental impact has been verified. Measurement of the production system's Environmental Footprint: favorable, fulfilling the hypothesis that wood products are carbon sinks and, therefore, can significantly contribute to reducing the industry's impact on the natural environment. Identification of ecosystem services or environmental benefits in the project areas verified by FSC.
  • Measuring the Social Footprint and contribution to the SDGs of wood product manufacturing. Implementation of a traceability system based on blockchain technology to enable consumers to understand the stages the wood has traveled and to guarantee its sustainable management. This system also provides information on certifications, such as FSC®, Fair Wood, and Social Footprint measurement.
