Promoting the economic development of rural areas by generating a responsible market for innovative forest products

Description

PRORURAL promotes the design and verification of a new profitable business model for the sustainable use of public forests with innovative forest products, in such a way that wealth and employment are generated and the forest is preserved.

Objectives
  • To design in detail a forestry business model that is economically viable, environmentally sustainable, socially responsible, tested by potential clients, ready to implement and replicable in other regions of the country.
  • Provide consumers with sufficient traceability information to make conscious and responsible purchasing decisions based on social and environmental criteria.
Results
  • Design of a mixed-ownership business model for the use of high-value public utility forests.
  • The economic viability of the business model has been confirmed and the minimization of environmental impact has been verified.
  • Measurement of the Environmental Footprint of the production system: favorable, fulfilling the hypothesis that wood products are carbon sinks and, therefore, can contribute significantly to reducing the impacts of the industry on the natural environment.
  • Identification of ecosystem services or environmental benefits in project areas verified by FSC.
  • Measuring the Social Footprint and contribution to the SDGs of wood product manufacturing.
  • Implementation of a traceability system based on blockchain technology so that consumers know the steps that the wood has taken and that it serves as a guarantee of its sustainable management and to know the certifications, such as FSC®, Fair Wood and the measurement of the Social Footprint.
