Cultiva, the largest demonstration event for extensive crops in Spain

The subtropical fruit sector will meet on May 13 and 14 at the technical conference "Innovations and Challenges in Plant Health of Subtropical Fruit Trees," organized by Phytoma in collaboration with TROPS and the Regional Government of Andalusia. This essential event will bring together researchers, technicians, advisors, companies, and public administrations to address the main health challenges of these crops and share the latest technological and sustainable management solutions. With an intensive and highly specialized program , the sessions will feature more than 30 top-level speakers, covering everything from integrated pest management in avocado, mango, papaya, and custard apple crops to the most advanced early detection techniques, biological control, and semiochemical applications. Key topics such as functional biodiversity, technical advice, and the impact of new regulations on integrated production will also be discussed. Conference on Brassica Carinata Cultivation in Blancas (Teruel)

The Teruel town of Blancas will host a transfer event focused on the cultivation of Brassica Carinata , an oilseed plant with great potential as a sustainable agricultural alternative and source of biomass. The event, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature the participation of Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de Aragón , Cereales Teruel Sociedad Cooperativa, and Cooperativas Agro-alimentarias de España , who will present the European CARINA project . This initiative seeks to promote and encourage the cultivation of carinata in rural areas as a viable and environmentally friendly option. During the event, key aspects related to the agronomic management of carinata will be discussed, its evolution during the current campaign will be analyzed, and a farmer will share his experience with this crop. The activity is aimed at farmers , technicians, and agricultural professionals interested in incorporating innovative and sustainable crops adapted to the conditions of the Aragonese region. About the CARINA project Funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe program, the CARINA project focuses on the development of emerging crops such as carinata and camelina. These oilseeds stand out for their low impact on indirect land use change (ILUC) and their suitability for generating sustainable raw materials for the bioeconomy. In addition to its applications in the production of oils and biobased products such as bioplastics, bioherbicides, and biostimulants, the project also contemplates the use of crop byproducts, such as protein-rich meal for livestock use and valuable compounds extracted from the mucilages and glucosinolates present in the seeds.

FUTURAL EU Rural Innovation Forum

FUTURAL (Powering the Future through Smart and Innovative Solutions for Rural Areas) is an EU-funded innovation project led by the Agricultural University of Athens, involving 21 partners from across Europe. The project seeks to test and pilot a set of community-led social, technological, and business innovations designed to generate lasting change through collaboration with rural communities. In this context, the project will organize its first EU-wide Rural Innovation Forum , a two-day networking event bringing together stakeholders from the rural ecosystem (such as FUTURAL multi-stakeholder pilot projects -MAPs-, rural innovators, rural networks, policy makers and implementers, EU-funded projects, organizations and entrepreneurs) with the aim of laying the groundwork for capacity building and experience sharing on smart community-led innovation in rural areas. Goals To increase the capacity of rural communities to implement and adopt social, technological, and commercial innovations by organizing a series of workshops on capacity development and policy and governance frameworks. Present and share experiences of co-creating innovations in multi-stakeholder pilot projects (MAPs). Introducing the Alpha version of the FUTURAL Smart Solutions and Metasearch Platform. The future of the EIP-AGRI Operational Groups

On May 14, 2025 , from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. CET , the European workshop entitled “The future of EIP-AGRI Operational Groups: challenges, opportunities and existing support services. Unlocking the potential of Operational Groups” will be held online. This initiative focuses on promoting cooperation and sharing practical tools to strengthen Operational Groups (OGs) in Europe. The event is the result of a collaboration between five EU-funded thematic networks: BBioNets , FOREST4EU , NUTRI-KNOW , Soil-X-Change and AQUAGRI-KNOW , which represent different levels of maturity in project implementation, from established initiatives to those in their early stages. This diversity will provide a broad and enriching insight into the functioning and challenges of GOs. During the workshop, key topics will be addressed such as: Factors that facilitate the creation of GO in different European contexts. Challenges faced by producers when developing or implementing a OG. Difficulties in the implementation of European projects, such as cost analysis and administrative complexity. Strategies and tools to promote the formation of new GOs. Under the theme "Collaboration in Action: Unlocking the Potential of Operational Groups," this event offers a unique opportunity for project teams, representatives from the agri-food sector, policymakers, and experts to discuss the future of Operational Groups as a driver of rural innovation. The Simbioliva project is being presented at Expoliva 2025 as an example of innovation in the olive oil sector.

On May 16 , the Simbioliva project will be presented at the 22nd International Scientific-Technical and Transfer Symposium Expoliva , where it will also have an informative poster on display, consolidating its position as one of the outstanding initiatives in terms of innovation and sustainability for the olive sector. The presentation will take place in IFEJA's Guadalcotón room , between 11:30 and 11:45 , as part of the session dedicated to R&D&I projects from the Agro-Food Cooperatives of Andalusia . César Díaz will be in charge of presenting Simbioliva, representing the organization. Simbioliva focuses on the valorization of olive byproducts through sustainable processes, reinforcing the sector's commitment to the circular economy and environmental efficiency. Its presentation is part of the official Expoliva program, a key event for highlighting the advances that will shape the future of olive oil.

Advanced agrocomposting of beef cattle manure in Lorca (Murcia)

As a result of the research project to develop a proposal for best available techniques for advanced agrocomposting of beef cattle manure , on May 20th Provacuno will hold a conference in Lorca (Murcia) where different agrocomposting scenarios will be demonstrated in a practical manner and a practical demonstration of the manufacture of complex compost-based pellets will be carried out. The event, which can also be followed online upon registration, is supported by Miguel Hernández University, the CIAGRO Institute for Agri-Food and Agro-Environmental Research and Innovation, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Climate Farm Demo, JISAP, and Agrobank. The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Riscal Hotel in Lorca with a presentation by Javier López, director of Provacuno , of the results of the advanced agrocomposting project for beef cattle manure. Next, Raúl Moral, Professor at Miguel Hernández University and expert in waste management, will discuss advanced manure composting and how it can generate better products on the farm. The program will continue with a presentation by Salvador Calvet and Elena Sanchís, from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, on the best available techniques for managing beef cattle manure. After the coffee break, Luciano Orden, from Miguel Hernández University , will present the development of advanced biofertilizers from this Provacuno project, with the subtitle of pelletization as added value, and Matilde Moro, director of Asoprovac , will introduce attendees to the Climate FArm Demo project. At 6:00 p.m., the group will move to the Living Lab at the JISAP Farm (Finca Pajel, Lorca) , where various agrocomposting scenarios will be demonstrated in a hands-on manner, along with a practical demonstration of how to manufacture complex compost-based pellets. Exchange of experiences between operational groups on the subject of precision livestock farming

Registration for the in-person workshop on precision livestock farming, which will be held on May 21, 2025, at the " iHub La Vega Innova " (in San Fernando de Henares, Madrid), organized by the PAC Network , is open until May 14. The objective is to promote the exchange of experiences between EIP-AGRI Operational Groups , innovative projects, and other stakeholders in rural areas, fostering collaboration, knowledge transfer, and the replication of innovative solutions . Attendance is free, with prior registration, and will include transportation from Atocha. The following operational groups are participating in this event: BOVIEX 4.O : Technological improvement in extensive cattle production in Spain GO BEERISK : New molecular tools for rapid monitoring of honey bee diseases in apiaries in the province of Granada DIAGNOSCORD : Monitoring lamb movement and temperature in a controlled environment to develop algorithms that advance disease diagnosis. SMART FARM : Development of digital twin technologies in different types of pig farms to improve management and production efficiency. SMARTGOAT : improving and digitalizing the goat industry, integrating advanced technologies to optimize goat farm management and improve product traceability. GO Galician Network of Model Farms : a pilot network of farms that will allow for the continuous collection of technical and economic data for monitoring production costs, which are key to ensuring the economic viability of farms.
