As of July 2017, the project has enabled the conservation of 20 olive groves totaling 3,604 hectares and the completion of 8,936 flora and fauna censuses. The following have been identified: 165 bird species, 58 ant species, more than 500 weed species, and nearly 140 woody plant species.

The implementation of 14 volunteer camps, in which 112 volunteers from all regions of Spain and more than 10 countries participated, carrying out activities to improve biodiversity. The project resulted in more than 12,000 woody plants planted, 1,500 m2 sown with seeds of native species in unproductive areas of the demonstration olive groves, 3 amphibian ponds, 14 watering troughs, 73 nest boxes, 14 raptor nests, 10 perches for birds of prey, 12 bat shelters, and 186 insect nests.

In addition, four market studies have been launched to understand the profile of EVOO consumers who are committed to the environment, in Spain, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and Germany.

Objectives

The aim is to define an innovative and highly valuable olive growing model that will contribute to halting biodiversity loss in the EU.

“Olive Alive: Towards the design and certification of biodiversity friendly olive groves” is a project launched by the Spanish Ornithological Society (SEO/BirdLife) with the aim of defining, on a scientific basis, an innovative olive growing model of great demonstrative value , viable from an agronomic, economic and social point of view, which contributes to halting the loss of biodiversity in the European Union.
