Biodiversity Foundation Project: Economic value of products, knowledge and innovation in grazing

Description

Naturaleza Pastoreada aims to support and promote pastoralism as a viable economic activity in protected natural areas, improving their conservation status. The project aims to increase the economic profitability of this activity through the marketing of training and tourism products based on pastoral knowledge, as well as highlighting and ensuring the role of women in pastoralism.

Description of activities

Naturaleza Pastoreada (Pastured Nature) plans to support grazing models on 15 farms, 4,000 hectares, and nine protected natural areas, which will improve the conservation status of seven habitats and nine bird species. To this end, a technical, scientific, social, and gender characterization of the grazing models in the project's protected natural areas will be conducted. The project will investigate the importance of grazing in their conservation, develop methodologies for biodiversity monitoring, and identify the socioeconomic models and characteristics of grazing, as well as the role of women in the activity.

In addition, plans will be developed to support pastoral conservation and support plans for the differentiation, marketing, and processing of derived products. These plans will also include the design of tourism products, the promotion of grazed pasture seeds ("Alpacas for sowing") as a new pastoral product, and the development of partnerships with other initiatives for differentiation, processing, marketing, and legislative improvements, as well as for the visibility of women in pastoralism. The project is expected to work with 15 extensive farms in 9 protected natural areas (4,000 ha, 200 head of cattle and 9,000 head of sheep), improving biodiversity indices on the farms, certifying 50 shepherds with the “Extensive Livestock Farming” seal, signing 4 agreements with shops or restaurants for the commercialization of projects, carrying out training and tourist activities, and implementing the “Alpacas for sowing” on 10 farms (30 ha mowing, 100 ha sowing, 400 ha grazing).

Contextual description

Pastoralism linked to nature conservation is a niche green employment that is in decline due to its low profitability, its limited social and environmental recognition, and competition from intensive livestock farming models that, far from contributing to conservation, have a significant environmental impact.

Objectives

The Naturaleza Pastoreada bioeconomy project aims to promote pastoralism as a viable and necessary activity for economic recovery, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation and adaptation in the current context of demographic challenges.
