The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food selects the winners of the Excellence Awards for Innovation for Rural Women

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has announced the winners of its “Awards of Excellence for Innovation for Rural Women” . In what is now its thirteenth edition, the awards are distributed to 13 different initiatives in which women play a fundamental role.

MAPA annually announces these awards to give visibility to the work of rural women in the diversification of economic activity and entrepreneurial actions.

In this 2022 edition, initiatives to enhance women in rural areas have been distinguished and three prizes have been awarded for each of the four categories: “Excellence in innovation in agricultural activity” , “Excellence to innovation in fishing or aquaculture activity” , “Excellence to innovation in the diversification of economic activity in rural areas” and “Excellence to communication”.

The winners, who will receive their recognition first-hand at an event on October 13 , were the following:

SPECIAL RECOGNITION FOR THE CAREER LINKED TO SUPPORTING WOMEN IN RURAL ENVIRONMENTS AND IN RURAL FISHING AREAS

The honorary recognition has been granted to the film director and screenwriter Carla Simón Pipó . Among his most famous films are “Verano 1993” or “Alcarràs” , a film that will represent Spain in the next edition of the Oscars.

EXCELLENCE TO INNOVATION IN AGRICULTURAL ACTIVITY

The first prize went to the farmer from Alcaudete (Jaén), María José Serrano Arnau , for using technological innovations aimed at combating water stress in the olive grove and the transfer of knowledge about these techniques.

The second prize went to La Caperuza Sociedad Civil for its goat farm and cheese factory, located in Bustarviejo (Madrid), which stands out for the environmental sustainability of the project by combining extensive traditional management with the use of modern livestock electronic devices such as GPS. .

The third prize was obtained by María Dolores Monge Jurado for her project “Shiit-Astur/Caprichos de shiitake” , which consists of the certified organic cultivation of shiitake mushrooms on chestnut and oak trunks in the forest, through the application of the ancient technique of Japanese cultivation in Belmonte de Miranda (Asturias). In addition to its mushrooms, of differentiated quality, it sells fresh and organic gluten-free pasta that it makes in its workshop.

EXCELLENCE TO INNOVATION IN FISHING OR AQUACULTURE ACTIVITY

The first prize went to AiguaNatura dels Ports SL for the conversion of a practically abandoned intensive trout farming fish farm into a new space for environmental education and sustainable aquaculture, based on closed-circuit aquaponic farming within the dels Ports Natural Park ( Tarragona).

The second prize went to the family business Frigoríficos SL , dedicated to the sale of frozen and cooked Galician octopus, which has developed a new line of business through the marketing of its cooking water (octopus fumet) until then discarded as residue.

The third prize went to Kombu del Cantábrico SL , a company located in Cambados (Pontevedra), which is dedicated to the conservation and sale of organic seaweed, both collected by itself and purchased from fishermen's associations in the area and which will soon begin its own production.

EXCELLENCE TO INNOVATION IN DIVERSIFICATION OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITY IN THE RURAL ENVIRONMENT

The first prize has been awarded to the Kikiricoop Sociedad Cooperativa Asturiana cooperative , in Cabranes (Asturias), dedicated to the agroecology and social and solidarity economy sector. It makes food from local raw materials, work that it combines with caring for people. Examples of its activity are the hazelnut cream with cocoa “Asturcilla” and the vegetarian-oriented catering “Confusion Comidas” .

The second prize went to Jaramera Cheese Factory , promoted by Quesopia SL , for standing out in the use of innovation techniques in production processes and in its products. The dairy products from this Madrid cheese factory are of high quality, artisanal production and have innovative organoleptic properties based on the trust inherent in local consumption.

The third prize went to Izaskun Montori for its interdisciplinary children's and neurological center, in the municipality of Peralta (Navarra), specialized in offering physiotherapy, rehabilitation, speech therapy and early care services in an area far from large urban centres.

EXCELLENCE IN COMMUNICATION

The first prize has been awarded to EFEAGRO SA , for its specialized news service in the agri-food sector and in rural areas; and its professionals. This news agency offers 130 daily news items in different formats and platforms.

The second prize has been awarded to the first rural podcast in Spain in a feminine key, Dalle Mio Nena . Produced by Marta Pérez Pérez , on behalf of Ruralismo Ilustrado SLL, this monthly radio program is full of invisible stories, unique interviews, alternative current affairs and independent humor that seeks to address current events in rural areas with a relaxed tone and, at the same time, serve as a speaker for women from these environments in Asturias.

The third prize went to the program "El Campo" on the regional television of Castilla-La Mancha . This daily information space, directed mainly to professionals in the agricultural sector, is dedicated to agriculture, livestock and the rural environment of the region.
