Description

Traditional olive groves are poorly profitable in the Community of Madrid (with declining olive prices) and are gradually being abandoned. Diversifying these olive groves, along with improved landscapes, could lead to increased income for olive growers, beekeepers, and the surrounding tourism sector. This, combined with environmental improvements in terms of soil and biodiversity, makes this project an opportunity for rural Madrid.

Description of activities

The activities are divided into 3 work packages (WP).

  • "Innovation in Land Management" will analyze previous experiences, farm selection and planting design, initial soil assessment (organic carbon, infiltration), and monitoring.
  • "Product Innovation" will introduce hives into olive groves, evaluating the production and quality of honey, pollen, and wax, as well as the production and yield of olive oil.
  • "Innovation in ecosystem services"—initial and final assessment of the entomofauna, a socioeconomic study of the honey olive grove; working groups with olive growers to explore their interest; a study of tourist attraction, etc.
Objectives

The overall objective of this project is to provide a sustainable management alternative for traditional olive groves in Madrid, which are so unprofitable, while also increasing biodiversity and the services these agrosystems provide to society. It will also identify problems that arise in both management and competition, especially root problems, and assess the potential benefits of this increased biodiversity for the Madrid olive sector.

Results

The practical results of this project should be assessed in the short and medium term. In the short term, and as a result of the activities carried out over these three years, it is expected to have generated benchmark cases and practices in mixed olive and aromatic crops, combined with beekeeping, simultaneously generating environmental improvements, especially in terms of soil quality, and complementary incomes and synergistic benefits in agroecological terms (increased biodiversity).

In the short term, after three years, if there is no competition between hedges of aromatic herbs and olive production, aid programs will likely be opened for planting aromatic herbs in olive groves, and there will also be agrotourism tools (the olive grove as a garden, customizing rural houses, etc.), which will continue in the medium term. In the medium term, scientific and technological confirmation of the advantages of mixed crops based on traditional olive grove settings will be achieved, especially in the most marginal or in more alkaline soils.

The project's scale, the project's projected plots and municipalities, and the planned communication, combined with the diverse capabilities of the partners involved, are expected to give the project great visibility.
