FUTURAL (Powering the Future through Smart and Innovative Solutions for Rural Areas) is an EU-funded innovation project led by the Agricultural University of Athens, involving 21 partners from across Europe. The project seeks to test and pilot a set of community-led social, technological, and business innovations designed to generate lasting change through collaboration with rural communities. In this context, the project will organize its first EU-wide Rural Innovation Forum , a two-day networking event bringing together stakeholders from the rural ecosystem (such as FUTURAL multi-stakeholder pilot projects -MAPs-, rural innovators, rural networks, policy makers and implementers, EU-funded projects, organizations and entrepreneurs) with the aim of laying the groundwork for capacity building and experience sharing on smart community-led innovation in rural areas. Goals To increase the capacity of rural communities to implement and adopt social, technological, and commercial innovations by organizing a series of workshops on capacity development and policy and governance frameworks. Present and share experiences of co-creating innovations in multi-stakeholder pilot projects (MAPs). Introducing the Alpha version of the FUTURAL Smart Solutions and Metasearch Platform. Maximize interaction and knowledge exchange among FUTURAL's MAPs, partners, and participating experts within and outside the project. PROGRAM | REGISTRATION

On May 16, 2025 , the OCA Puerta del Camino Hotel in Santiago de Compostela will host the 1st Congress of Young People and Women in the Agri-Food and Forestry Sector , an initiative promoted by Unións Agrarias-UPA that will bring together more than a hundred participants in a key event to address the future of rural areas. This in-person conference, scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. , aims to raise awareness about the abandonment of rural areas and agroforestry activities , one of the determining factors in the depopulation process affecting many areas of the country. The event also seeks to offer innovative solutions and management practices aimed at halting this abandonment , with special emphasis on new formulas for generational transfer and farm succession . The conference is part of a biannual program, which includes a second edition of the congress in May 2026 , and responds to the need to highlight the key role of youth and women in revitalizing rural areas and strengthening the agri-food and forestry sectors. This meeting will be an opportunity to share experiences, access up-to-date knowledge, and create networks that promote the sustainable future of rural Galicia and the entire region. As a result of the research project to develop a proposal for best available techniques for advanced agrocomposting of beef cattle manure , on May 20th Provacuno will hold a conference in Lorca (Murcia) where different agrocomposting scenarios will be demonstrated in a practical manner and a practical demonstration of the manufacture of complex compost-based pellets will be carried out. The event, which can also be followed online upon registration, is supported by Miguel Hernández University, the CIAGRO Institute for Agri-Food and Agro-Environmental Research and Innovation, the Polytechnic University of Valencia, Climate Farm Demo, JISAP, and Agrobank. The event will begin at 4 p.m. at the Riscal Hotel in Lorca with a presentation by Javier López, director of Provacuno , of the results of the advanced agrocomposting project for beef cattle manure. Next, Raúl Moral, Professor at Miguel Hernández University and expert in waste management, will discuss advanced manure composting and how it can generate better products on the farm. The program will continue with a presentation by Salvador Calvet and Elena Sanchís, from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, on the best available techniques for managing beef cattle manure. After the coffee break, Luciano Orden, from Miguel Hernández University , will present the development of advanced biofertilizers from this Provacuno project, with the subtitle of pelletization as added value, and Matilde Moro, director of Asoprovac , will introduce attendees to the Climate FArm Demo project. At 6:00 p.m., the group will move to the Living Lab at the JISAP Farm (Finca Pajel, Lorca) , where various agrocomposting scenarios will be demonstrated in a hands-on manner, along with a practical demonstration of how to manufacture complex compost-based pellets. For the past two and a half years, the LIFE BIOBEST project consortium has conducted extensive research and analysis to identify key enabling conditions, models, and strategies for biowaste management to thrive in Europe and close the biological cycle gap through the consistent use of high-quality compost and digestate in soils. As LIFE BIOBEST concludes its research journey, it will hold its final high-level conference in Brussels on June 5, 2025. This event will bring together leading experts in the field of bio-waste management, local pioneers, and EU policymakers to: To present LIFE BIOBEST's comprehensive resources and tools developed to enable municipal and regional authorities to improve their bio-waste management systems and overcome local challenges; Share key policy recommendations to address current shortcomings in bio-waste management in the EU; Discuss the future of the sector and the necessary steps to follow. From June 10 to 12, 2025, CIHEAM Zaragoza will host the International Symposium "Empowering Women through Innovation in Mediterranean Agri-Food Systems." Organized by CIHEAM Zaragoza and the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), with the collaboration of the CIHEAM General Secretariat and the support of the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the event will bring together representatives of international organizations such as FAO, IFAD, OECD, the European Commission, ICARDA, and IWMI, as well as entrepreneurs, researchers, and members of civil society and the private sector. The symposium seeks to highlight the role of women as drivers of change toward more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient agri-food systems. A dynamic program, including lectures, roundtables, case studies, interactive workshops, and field visits, will address the main challenges and opportunities facing women in Mediterranean agriculture and rural areas. The event will also address how innovation—from digital technologies to agroecological and social solutions—can catalyze women's empowerment in agri-food systems, transforming traditional practices and promoting more sustainable and inclusive models.
