The PigStun* project aims to encourage EU pig slaughterhouses that use high concentrations of carbon dioxide to stun pigs to adopt more welfare-friendly systems by testing the technical specifications and feasibility of four promising alternatives. During this webinar, the following alternatives will be presented: argon reconditioning system, helium system, optimized CAS process, and improved electrical stunning system. A description of the system will be provided, along with the advantages and disadvantages of these alternatives and their impact on the economy, the environment, labor, and animal welfare. During the webinar there will be time for questions and discussion. PigStun is the beneficiary of a grant agreement signed with the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) under the Single Market Programme – Food Strand, aiming to improve pig welfare. The PigStun consortium is comprised of beneficiaries and associated partners from the Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, and Spain, including academic research partners, slaughterhouse equipment developers, and five pig slaughtering companies. On April 7 , Madrid will host a new meeting of The Food Changemakers , Europe's largest think tank dedicated to the transformation of the agri-food sector. This expert forum, sponsored by the Spanish organization KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub , seeks to generate a real impact on the development of long-term policies, strategies, and regulations in the food industry. The event, which will take place at the Tramo gastronomic space, will feature various roundtables addressing the sector's main challenges. Topics to be discussed include geopolitics and the supply chain, open innovation, water management, the future of agriculture, decarbonization, advanced nutrition and longevity, food service and retail, food safety, artificial intelligence and market trends, new proteins, and reducing food waste . The 17th edition of the International Fair for Animal Production ( FIGAN ) will take place from March 25 to 28, 2025 at the Feria de Zaragoza facilities. FIGAN aims to become the meeting point for the livestock sector in the Iberian Peninsula once again. At the last edition, 987 exhibiting companies presented the most outstanding technological innovations , in 77,083 m2 of surface area. The 1st National Meeting of Young People and Hosts participating in the Cultiva Program will take place in Madrid on November 27. This program promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food provides young people from rural areas with access to on-site training, guided by the managers of model farms, examples of good practices and the implementation of innovation in the sector. In order to bring together the participants of the CULTIVA Programme (young people, hosts of model farms and management entities) from the 2020 to 2023 editions, and to create a network among all of them to discuss this initiative and the generational change in the agricultural sector, this meeting will take place, which will include discussion panels and activities that promote the exchange of experiences. On the verge of its 40th edition, BioCultura Madrid will once again show that “bio” is not/was not a fad and that it is here to stay. The fair will be held in November at the Feria de Madrid-Ifema venue. The Subdirectorate General for Innovation and Digitalisation has organised a new webinar of the Observatory of the Digitalisation of the Spanish Agri-Food Sector . With this event, it resumes its series of webinars after the summer break, addressing key issues related to digitalisation in the agri-food sector. The city will host the respective annual sessions of the three main European rural advice networks (IALB, EUFRAS and SEASN) that come together to form this major event with the motto "Adapting to zero emissions" for 2024.
