The "5 a day" Association is holding its 17th "5 a day" Professional Conference under the motto "Transforming the consumption of the future: health, fruit and vegetables". The event will take place in Madrid, on March 7 at 9:30 a.m., at the Mercamadrid Administrative Center. All sectors of the agri-food sector are invited to a day full of knowledge, networking and new opportunities.

IPMWise is a Decision Support Tool designed for precise and targeted weed control, based on field research conducted over the past six decades. Available for: Alfalfa, Lupine, Barley, Rapeseed, Chickpea, Sunflower, Pea, Broad Bean, Lentil, Corn, Soybean, Wheat, Triticale and Vetch; in this online seminar you will be able to learn how they work. Throughout the Seminar, Professor Montull will present the agronomic bases on which this HATD for Weed Control in Extensive Crops is based.

Organized by IRTA , with the participation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and the support of the Latin American Fund for Irrigated Rice (FLAR), it will explore innovative solutions to global challenges such as climate change, plant protection, optimization of fertilization and economic sustainability. This meeting will also highlight the importance of future collaborations with Latin America, strengthening strategic alliances to ensure a sustainable and competitive future for rice, an essential crop in our economy, food and ecosystem. This conference, aimed at achieving more efficient, sustainable and resilient rice production, will showcase the most relevant results of the trials of the RiceFertiSat project, funded through Operation 16.01.01 of Cooperation for Innovation of the Rural Development Programme of Catalonia 2014-2020; of the projects 'BestRice', 'Ricres' and 'Ricescape', funded by the State Research Agency, Ministry of Science and Innovation and the Climate Fund: AgriregenCat , AgriCarboniCat and Mitigation of rice fields . On January 15, 2025 , the horticulture sector has a key date with the conference entitled “Innovation and Challenges in Horticulture” , an event that will bring together experts, companies and professionals in a forum for the exchange of knowledge. The conference, organized by Tierras Agricultura magazine and Grupo Interempresas, will be held in an environment designed to foster connections between the main players in the sector. Program of the day 09:00 - Opening: The event will begin with a welcome by Ángel Pérez, Director of the Agricultural Area of Grupo Interempresas , and representatives of Banco Sabadell and SOAGA , under the moderation of Alejandro de Vega, Editorial Coordinator of Tierras Agricultura . Block I: Trends in the horticulture sector This first block will start at 09:30 with the presentation by SOAGA, followed by Enrique Cadiñanos, from Bejo Ibérica, who will address the importance of seed quality in horticultural varieties. In addition, there will be an additional presentation before giving way to a coffee break and networking at 10:15 . Block II: The challenges in plant health of horticultural crops The session will resume at 11:00 with a focus on plant health. Among the most notable presentations are: Hugo Moreno (CAR UPM-CSIC), who will talk about the use of Artificial Intelligence in weed control. Representatives from BAYER and FMC will share their perspectives on innovations in the field of phytosanitary products. Juanjo López , Director of Operations at Agriindus, will analyze agricultural and industrial integration in horticulture . The block will conclude with a round table at 12:15 , focusing on the importance of technical advice in the management of horticultural crops. Closing and networking The day will end with a closing ceremony at 1:30 p.m. , followed by a Spanish wine to facilitate networking among attendees. To transfer to the sector the results obtained from the experimental work that is being carried out and that the farmer could not develop individually, in order to investigate the behaviour of the varieties and the different strategies to guarantee the sustainability of the crops. The Economics, Post-harvest and Industry Working Groups of the Spanish Society of Horticultural Sciences (SECH) are organizing a new online Congress on "The agri-food challenge in the face of climate change" that will take place online on December 3 and 4 . The challenges of the agri-food sector in the current climate change scenario and the 2030 Agenda require a response from the entire agri-food chain, from production, through industry, process improvement, marketing and responsible food consumption, and influencing the responsibility of society itself. These challenges become challenges and opportunities that will be addressed at the Congress. The conference will be organised in sessions that will include oral presentations and invited speakers with works related to fruit and vegetable production, post-harvest, circular economy and environmental sustainability.

CARINA is a four-year transnational Innovation Action (until October 2026), supported by the European Union under the Horizon Europe programme. The project focuses on new sustainable and diversified agricultural systems, including two new oilseed crops, carinata and camelina, capable of providing multiple low-iLUC feedstocks for the bio-based economy.

The Plant Health and Certification Service is the technical unit that carries out the functions of control and certification of seeds and nursery plants, the management of surveillance and control plans for plant pests and diseases, the marketing and use of phytosanitary products and their evaluation, and technical advice to the production sector on plant health and seed production.

The VIII Technical Forum on Plant Health organized by the Center for Plant Health and Certification will take place on November 28 in the Auditorium of the Mediterranean Agricultural Institute of Zaragoza

On September 27 , at the IFAPA Rancho de la Merced facilities in Jerez de la Frontera, the second open day of the seminar will be held. This session, which will begin at 9:00 a.m. , will feature a series of technical presentations focused on innovation and sustainability in Andalusian horticulture. Highlights include: BIHOX® oxygenation technology and its impact on zucchini and watermelon crops. The biomass potential of Andalusian horticulture and the challenges for the circular bioeconomy. New advances in biotechnology and the development of virus-resistant rootstocks. Safety in the use of phytosanitary products and the safest and most sustainable technologies in horticulture. The Spanish Association for Conservation Agriculture Living Soils (AEACSV) will hold a second free field day on conservation agriculture in extensive crops in September. This event will be held on September 25 at the "Casa Roig" farm, located between Alpera (Albacete) and Ayora (Valencia). The Casa de Roig estate, with 436 hectares, of which 300 are dedicated to extensive crops and the rest to lavender and vineyards with plant cover, is a model to follow in the region. During the day, topics such as soil management, crop rotation, soil cover, nitrogen fertilization and the environmental benefits of these practices will be discussed. The event will include four thematic stations: Station 1: 30 years of direct sowing in dry and irrigated land in Albacete, by Miguel Barnuevo. Station 2: From direct sowing to ground cover, by Vicente Bodas, agricultural director at Agrisat. Station 3: Farmer experiences, from theory to practice, by Juan José Puertas, farmer and farm owner. The first open day of the 53rd Seminar for Horticultural Technicians and Specialists will be held on September 23rd . It is organized by the Andalusian Institute for Research and Training in Agriculture, Fisheries, Food and Organic Production (IFAPA) in collaboration with COITAND and MAPA. The event will take place at the IES El Picacho , in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, and will begin at 10:30 a.m. The programme includes a presentation on premium horticulture and a historical overview of IFAPA in Chipiona, followed by several technical presentations that will address key topics such as: The short digital marketing channel in Andalusia. This event will take place on September 19 in Cuarte (Huesca) , at the Castillo de Orus farm, known for its successful management in direct sowing for more than 21 years. The Castillo de Orus farm, with 800 hectares, of which 640 are dedicated to extensive crops using direct sowing, is a benchmark in the region. During the day, topics such as soil management, crop rotation, soil cover, nitrogen fertilization and the environmental benefits of these practices will be addressed. The event will include four themed stations and a dynamic demonstration of machinery: Station 1: No-tillage and its effects on the soil, by Jesús Ángel Betrán, director of the Agroenvironmental Laboratory of the Government of Aragon. Every year, the renowned Purple Garlic Fair is held at the Las Pedroñeras Exhibition and Exhibition Centre. This event brings together around 40 exhibitors and attracts around 6,000 visitors interested in the various sectors related to garlic. The sectors represented include all stages of garlic processing and packaging, as well as herbs and medicinal products, phytosanitary products, seeds, marketing and publishing, machinery and equipment for sowing, harvesting, storage, transport, weighing, packaging and conditioning, as well as a variety of agricultural vehicles.
